The University of the Philippines-Diliman School of Urban and Regional Planning is collaborating with the local government unit of Buenavista, Guimaras in the preparation of their Strategic Water Resources Plan. This undertaking is in response to the request of Mayor Eugenio Reyes of the Municipality of Buenavista, Province of Guimaras for technical assistance to ensure a sustainable water supply for the municipality. In view of the impending population growth and heightened urbanization, the local government is working with agencies in the water sector, as well as the community, to meet the increase demand for potable water in the next 20 years.
The UP planning team is composed of graduate students in Urban and Regional Planning, most of them enrolled in the international program, Spatial Planning for Regions in Growing Economies (SPRING). The team is led by licensed environmental planners, Prof. Carmeli Marie C. Chaves and Ms. Rocelyn C. De Vera. The Buenavista Strategic Water Resources Plan is expected to be completed by May 2017.The international students from the Urban and Regional Planning of the University of the Philippines Diliman recently arrived at Buenavista, Province of Guimaras to conduct a 10-day study and provide technical assistance to development planning particularly to the town’s Water Management Strategic Plan.
Mayor Reyes said that he is thankful that UP-Diliman responded to his call for a technical assistance and hopes that the study will help in the impending urbanization of the Municipality of Buenavista in particular and the whole Province of Guimaras in general and the possible water shortage that could happen in the near future. It is known that the Municipality of Buenavista is one of the two towns out of the five municipalities in the Province of Guimaras that has a level 3 type of water system that serves 31 out of its total 36 barangays.
